How to Exercise While Traveling (Or Anywhere)
Let’s be real—figuring out how to exercise while traveling can be a total pain, especially when your accommodation doesn’t have a gym or pool. But I’ve got you. Whether you’re into weights, stretching, or quick bodyweight routines, this guide pulls straight from my own travel-tested experience.
I’ve had plenty of stretches (pun intended) where I didn’t have access to a gym—or the budget or motivation to go to one. When I lived abroad, I worked out in a tiny room with no equipment, just like I’ve done on many trips. That’s how I got creative, and now I’m sharing everything I’ve learned with you.
Note: These are tips based on my personal experience staying active while traveling. Always listen to your body, and check with a healthcare provider if you’re dealing with an injury or specific medical condition.

What To Prepare & Pack For Exercising On A Trip

Let’s be honest—working out while traveling rarely just “happens.” If you don’t have a plan (or easy access to a gym), it’s all too easy to skip it entirely. But here’s the good news: with a few apps and lightweight essentials, you can make exercise feel doable no matter where you are.
The easiest way to make workouts happen? Have guided routines ready to go. Here are my favorite ways to find quick, travel-friendly workouts:
Download a Workout App (or Two)
Apps with guided workouts make it so much easier to stay active on the go. Whether you’ve got 30 minutes or just 5, there’s something out there for every fitness level and style. My go-to free apps are:
All three offer plenty of workouts without needing to upgrade to a paid version—and using a few gives you variety depending on your mood or energy level.
Try YouTube for Free Workouts
YouTube is another great (and free!) option. I love this 30-minute “walk in place” video—it’s deceptively simple but gets my heart rate up every time. There are also tons of fun dance workouts if you want something more upbeat.
Heads-up: If you don’t have YouTube Premium, the ads can get annoying—but I treat them as a built-in water break!
Quick tip: The FitOn app has a fantastic short neck stretch routine—perfect if you’re feeling stiff after a long travel day or before bed.
What to pack to help your workouts

One of the biggest questions I see is: How do you replace lifting weights on a trip? The answer is surprisingly simple—resistance bands.
You don’t need anything fancy, and honestly, the simplest ones are best. They’re lightweight, take up almost no space in your bag, and can seriously level up your workouts. Apps like Blogilates and others I’ve mentioned include tons of workouts that use bands for strength training on the go.
Other smart, space-saving additions:
- Yoga Towel – If you’re tight on space and don’t want to carry a mat, a yoga towel is a great alternative. Some yoga routines even use a rolled-up towel as a prop. Bonus: it doubles as a beach or shower towel!
- Foldable yoga mat – If a towel won’t cut it (especially on hard floors), consider a compact travel mat that folds rather than rolls.
- Jump rope – Perfect for in-room cardio. It’s super lightweight, fits in any bag, and doesn’t require much space to use.

What to Wear (and Pack) for Travel-Friendly Workouts
The right gear makes all the difference when it comes to staying active while traveling. Here’s a list of what I bring—and trust me, these items earn their spot in your luggage:
- Running or walking shoes – I personally wear Brooks. Make sure yours are broken in and supportive.
- Chaco sandals – Perfect if you’ll be hiking near water or need a durable, travel-friendly sandal. Great grip, and way better for your feet than cheap flip-flops.
- Athletic socks with cushioning – This is one of those little upgrades that makes a huge difference. Look for brands like Bombas, Feetures, or Smartwool for breathable, moisture-wicking socks that won’t leave your feet wrecked after long days.
- Extra hairbands – Always good to have backups!
- Gel insoles – Especially helpful if you’re walking a ton or doing higher-impact movement, or if you’re prone to issues like plantar fasciitis, like me.
- Workout-friendly clothing made from clean, natural materials & free of microplastics – I opt for cotton, bamboo, and other breathable fabrics that don’t irritate my skin or cause eczema flares.
- A jacket – For outdoor workouts depending on the climate.
- A water bottle – Only bring one if you can drink the tap water at your destination.
- Electrolyte powder – I use Jigsaw Adrenal Cocktail for travel (and daily) because it’s simple and clean, with no flavors or additives.
- Protein snacks or powder – I linked my favorite clean protein options and travel snacks with protein in this post if you want travel-friendly, allergy-safe ideas.
- Sunscreen – I use Badger for its minimal ingredients and sensitive-skin-friendly formula.
- A breathable cotton hat – I recommend this one from my shop made with 100% organic cotton and featuring a subtle labyrinth design—ideal for travel, outdoor workouts, or just keeping the sun off your face.
Basic Exercises To Master & Practice Habitually

The best exercises to build into your routine are the ones that boost mobility, flexibility, and functional strength. These moves make travel days easier—whether you’re stuck in a cramped plane seat or climbing endless city stairs.
Here are some of the essentials (click any of them for a how-to video or article):
Want a beginner-friendly routine using some of these? Try mixing 5 of these into a 15-minute circuit before or after sightseeing.
How To Find Workout Spots When You Travel

One of the easiest ways to stick to a workout routine while traveling is to make movement part of your day. Luckily, most cities have outdoor spots where you can get a workout in without going out of your way.
Many parks have free outdoor gyms or fitness trails with built-in equipment. Look out for pull-up bars, balance beams, and other structures you can use to add strength training to your routine.
Even without designated equipment, you can get creative—use benches for step-ups, tricep dips, or box jumps while walking or running through a park.
If you’re near a beach, lake, or pool, swimming is an amazing full-body workout and a great way to relieve sore muscles after long days of walking (I used to love swimming after excavating all day—best recovery ever).
Traveling in colder months? Some destinations have saunas you can book for the day, and you can also travel to hot springs destinations. These aren’t workouts, but they’re definitely great for muscle recovery and overall wellness.
Track Your Workouts (& Recovery)

When you’re walking a lot during travel, it’s easy to forget how much movement you’re already getting. That’s where a fitness tracker comes in handy—even just using your phone to track steps can help you decide whether you actually need that HIIT session, or if a recovery-focused day with yoga and stretching makes more sense.
I personally love using MyFitnessPal to track workouts, meals, and nutrients when I need more structure. And if you’re into sleep data or biofeedback, the Oura Ring is a popular option that also tracks activity, sleep, and overall recovery.
Most importantly, listen to your body. Staying hydrated (especially with electrolytes), eating enough protein and nutrients, and getting solid sleep is what helps your body recover and stay energized for your next adventure.
Reminder: Take rest days—ideally once a week—to give your body the break it deserves.

Final Thoughts: Move Your Body, Support Your Journey
Exercising while traveling doesn’t have to be complicated—or perfect. With a little prep, flexibility and mindfulness, you can stay active in a way that supports your energy, your overall wellness, and your experience.
Whether it’s a walk through a new city, a quick stretch before bed, or a full bodyweight session in your hotel room, the key is consistency without pressure.
