LEVEL8 Freeloop Review: Is This Zipperless Carry-On Worth It?
This is my honest LEVEL8 Freeloop review. The suitcase was gifted to me for review, but all opinions are my own.
We all know the drill: you struggle through packing, only to regret how much you crammed in the minute you start lugging it through the airport. Security pulls you aside, opens your bag, and suddenly nothing fits back the way it did at home.
By the time you hoist it into the overhead bin, your shoulders are sore and the suitcase feels twice as heavy as when you started.
That’s why the zipperless LEVEL8 Freeloop instantly caught my attention. No tugging at stubborn zippers, no clothes spilling everywhere — just clean latches, smart compartments, and a design that feels more secure from the start.
As a solo, wellness-minded traveler, my luggage has to be light enough on my joints and brain. I’ve used LEVEL8 before and loved their quality, so I had to know: is ditching the zipper actually better? Here’s my honest take.

Why I Chose LEVEL8 Freeloop
Zippers are great—until you’re sprinting through security with an overstuffed carry-on and the teeth won’t meet. That’s why the zipperless latch system, vintage styling, and easy-maneuver build of the Freeloop hooked me.
I’d already used other LEVEL8 suitcases and knew I liked the brand, so when I had the chance to test another model, I didn’t hesitate. I even field-tested it in Colonial Williamsburg — curious strangers asked me to pop it open right there on the cobblestones (more on that later).
Here’s what drew me to the Freeloop specifically:
👉 Zipperless closure + retro look: the vintage-inspired buckles feel both stylish and secure.
👉 Practical for solo travel: lightweight, easy to maneuver, with smooth spinner wheels and extra handles.
👉 Wellness-minded choice: less strain on your body and less frustration when traveling alone.

Does It Fit My Travel Philosophy?
When I review luggage, I’m not just asking, is this practical? I’m asking, does this suitcase support the way I want to travel? For me, that means solo travel, mindful travel, wellness travel — and yes, that includes being budget-conscious.
Here’s how the LEVEL8 Freeloop measures up:
✨ Solo Travel Test
Traveling alone means every bag is my responsibility. The Freeloop’s smooth spinner wheels, comfortable handles, and compact size make it easy to maneuver without needing an extra hand. No wrestling with stubborn zippers in the security line = travel feels calmer and less cluttered.
✨ Mindful Travel Test
This suitcase encourages mindful travel through intentional packing. With no expandable zipper, you can’t keep cramming in “one more thing.” This luggage fit more than I expected, too – which means with what I packed (which I’ll list later in this post), I still had room to throw in some extras if needed – at home or souvenirs.
Mindful travel also includes smart budgeting. When I keep my bag minimal, I’m less tempted by impulse buys and more likely to invest in experiences — like wellness retreats that actually recharge you.
👉 If shopping is part of your trip, you’ll just want to plan for a larger checked bag or a backpack add-on, like my go-to packable day pack.
✨ Wellness Travel Test
I’ve had health challenges that make heavy, awkward bags more than just inconvenient — they can be exhausting. The Freeloop’s lightweight frame (at about 9 lbs it’s not featherlight, but the compact size keeps it manageable) and easy roll design mean it’s easier on my body. That leaves more energy for actually enjoying the trip and focusing on my wellbeing.
In other words? The Freeloop passes my travel philosophy test. It’s not just about getting from point A to point B — it’s about traveling with intention, ease, and a little extra peace of mind.

First Impressions + Unboxing
The LEVEL8 Freeloop arrived on my doorstep in a big box, and unboxing it felt like a little travel gift to myself.
Right away, I noticed the thoughtful extras: a clear protective cover (more like a raincoat than a disposable sleeve) and a luggage tag. The cover has Velcro along the bottom, so it fully wraps the case — not just the sides. It’s actually useful, not just packaging, and I now use it for storage to protect the shiny exterior from scuffs.
Watch my unboxing video to see it for yourself:
The suitcase itself looks sleek with a retro edge. The handles deserve their own mention: the top handle has some give to it, making it more comfortable to grab, while the side handle adds to that vintage-inspired design. Combined with the smooth 360° spinner wheels, it feels easy to maneuver even before you start packing.
It also comes with a TSA-approved lock built into the zipperless closure. I’ll admit it took me a minute to get used to opening a suitcase without zippers, but once I figured out the latch system, it was simple and actually more satisfying to click open than a zip.
Overall, my first impression was that this is both stylish and functional — the kind of bag that makes you feel like you’re traveling smart, not struggling with your luggage.
How to Open the Latches on the LEVEL8 Suitcase
When I first unboxed this suitcase, I’ll be honest — the latches completely stumped me. They look like you’re supposed to press on the side pads, but that’s not how they work at all.
Watch the video, then read the instructions if needed:
Here’s the trick:
- Set your combination (the default is 0-0-0).
- Look at the TSA lock in the middle. Right above the numbers, you’ll see the keyhole and a small switch.
- Slide that switch upward. This is the hidden release mechanism.
- Both latches will spring open instantly, and then you can open the suitcase.
It’s actually simple once you know, but not intuitive if you’re expecting the latches themselves to pop. Consider this your little “secret handshake” with your suitcase – it definitely adds some security and peace of mind because it’s not intuitive!

The inside of the LEVEL8 Freeloop is simple but structured: a divider, a compression strap, and a small wet bag. Unlike expandable zipper suitcases, this one doesn’t have a lot of “give,” which means you can’t just force in that last sweater. At first glance, that might sound limiting, but I actually see it as a benefit.

As a solo traveler who’s had to be extra mindful about luggage because of health challenges — from eczema and fibroid-related fatigue to past knee issues — I know how quickly the wrong bag can become a burden.
Over the years, I’ve learned that packing light is a wellness practice in itself. The Freeloop encourages that: its layout keeps things neat, with a divider that prevents items from spilling out and compression straps that hold everything in place. For mindful travelers, it’s a built-in reminder to bring what you truly need — not just what fits.
I also appreciate that the Freeloop is compact enough for most international carry-on restrictions. That peace of mind is huge when you’re traveling alone and don’t want the hassle of having to check a bag unexpectedly.
Make It Yours (Optional Add-Ons)
The Freeloop comes with a sleek, neutral luggage tag included. If you’d like something more unique or symbolic, I’ve designed my own tags and passport covers with solo + wellness travelers in mind.

Pros & Cons of the Freeloop Carry-On
Pros:
- Zipperless design: no jamming, snagging, or broken pulls
- Sturdy hard shell: protects contents, especially on international trips
- Smooth spinner wheels: glides effortlessly through airports (less strain on arms/shoulders)
- Dual handles (top + side): easier to lift solo, vintage-inspired look
- Protective cover + luggage tag included: thoughtful extras right out of the box
- Stylish colors: Sage Green, Coconut White and Dark Green
Cons:
- Heavier than some soft-sided carry-ons (~9 lbs)
- No expansion zipper: limited flexibility for overpackers
- Exterior can scuff: protective cover helps but might need a full suitcase cover
- Premium price: worth it for quality, but higher than budget brands
👉 Keep it pretty: The glossy shell can scuff. Use the included clear cover for storage and transit, or grab a fitted protector if you’re hard on luggage. Wipes clean with a damp cloth—no harsh chemicals.
Packing Test & Real-Life Use
Since I wasn’t leaving on a trip right away, I packed the Freeloop as if I were heading out for five days and then brought it to Colonial Williamsburg to test how it rolled on cobblestones, dirt paths, grass, and pavement.
It handled all of it well. The glossy shell did pick up a little dust and grass with static cling, but that wipes (or blows) right off. If you want it spotless, the included cover comes in handy.
When it came to packing, I treated it like the real thing: sandals, fitness gear (I love to travel with packable fitness gear like resistance bands and a jump rope — here are more tips on exercising while traveling), clothes, toiletries, my laptop, and a few accessories.
The case closed cleanly with no wrestling, and I realized afterward I’d forgotten chargers, but there was still plenty of space.

The divider and compression straps kept everything neat, and opening it up actually felt calm instead of chaotic. As a solo, wellness-minded traveler, that matters to me. The Freeloop supports light, intentional packing — exactly how I like to travel.
For longer trips, I’d pair it with a backpack or second small carry-on, but for short trips or true minimalist packing, it works beautifully on its own.
Here’s exactly what I fit into the LEVEL8 Freeloop (with a bit of room to spare):

- Wet bag (included with the suitcase)

- MacBook Air laptop
- Fitness & Wellness
- Jump rope
- 3 resistance bands
- Knee brace
- Cooling cloth
- Eye mask
- 2 pairs of eczema gloves
- Spa headband (for skincare/makeup)
- Clothing
- Pajamas (1 set)

Is the LEVEL8 Freeloop Worth It?
So, is the LEVEL8 Freeloop worth it? For me, yes — it lives up to LEVEL8’s reputation: simple packing, smooth rolling, and sturdier than expected (even after opening it on a paved road to show a couple who asked about it).
The extras — protective cover, wet bag, laptop sleeve and luggage tag — add value, though the glossy finish does pick up smudges.
Would I buy it without the gifted offer? Yes. It’s not the cheapest carry-on, but it makes travel days lighter on both body and mind, which is exactly what I look for.
Who the LEVEL8 Freeloop Is For
- Solo travelers: easy to maneuver and lift without relying on anyone else.
- Wellness-minded travelers: lightweight design and smooth wheels reduce physical fatigue.
- Minimalist packers: perfect if you travel light and don’t need expansion space.
- Style-conscious travelers: vintage aesthetic stands out without looking gimmicky.
- Frequent flyers: TSA lock, sturdy shell, and carry-on size make it reliable for regular use.
Who Might Want to Skip the LEVEL8 Freeloop
- Overpackers + heavy shoppers without extra luggage: no zipper expansion means limited extra space for souvenirs.
- Travelers on a tight budget: it’s an investment piece (though discounts are common).
- Checked-bag travelers: if you almost always fly with large suitcases, you may not get much use out of a premium carry-on.
- People rough on their luggage: glossy shell may scuff, so you’ll want to use the included cover or buy an extra protector.
- Travelers who prefer soft-sided bags: if you like external pockets or flexible packing, a hardshell zipperless case might not feel as practical.
Final Verdict
Bottom line: If you’re a solo traveler, pack light on purpose, or want beautiful luggage that makes packing easier and reduces some physical constraints, the LEVEL8 Freeloop is worth it. It’s an investment piece — not for overpackers, but it delivers sleek, durable, low-stress travel.
Quick Verdict:
✔️ Smooth, sturdy zipperless design
✔️ Easy to roll + lift solo
✔️ Mindful packing compartments
❌ A bit heavier & pricier than soft-sided luggage
👉 Best for: solo travelers, wellness-minded minimalists, style-conscious flyers.
